Introduction- Compared to women still without children, in the mother’s organ, the areas related to movement and speech are triggered when they hear the child cry, study shows
Do you also have the impression that your ear got sharper after you became a mother? Science explains. According to a research published by the National Academy of Sciences performed with about 600 women from 11 different countries, the brain undergoes some adaptations, in fact, after motherhood. Because of this, when they hear their children crying, the brain areas associated with the intention to move and speak are activated immediately in the mothers. What did not happen in the experiments with those who had no children.
All this is the result of a preparation of our body for motherhood. And of course it does not happen overnight: its nine months of countless new things and learning. As explained by the neuroscientist Gilberto Xavier, responsible for the laboratory of Neuroscience and Behavior of USP, it is a combination of biological and environmental factors. “By becoming pregnant, the woman undergoes a series of hormonal changes that generate different brain connections, including the production of new neurons,” she explains. In addition, according to the specialist, the interaction between the mother and the child in the day to day (that stimulates the vision, the smell, and the touch of the woman) provoke new changes in the brain of the same one.
In fact, as the specialist adds, these brain transformations have been studied for at least 15 years. The latest findings, as has been proven once again in this study, are that pregnancy hormones alter some functions in the brain, which makes new connections. It has already been observed in other research, incidentally, that new neurons are born in the female brain at this stage.
What about adoptive mothers?
This study, in particular, was limited to biological mothers. However, we know that the interaction between mother and baby in the day to day also causes many transformations in the brain of the woman. In taking care of him, be it the biological or adoptive mother, all five senses of the mother are stimulated and, of course, these new experiences bring about change as well. One of them, for example, is the increase in the hormone oxytocin (which many call the love hormone), a substance whose levels rise in our body when we are in love. In the case of maternity, he is responsible for strengthening the bond with the child. In conclusion, being a mother is a great transformation for every woman.
